What does it treat?
Chronic headaches and migraines (including temporal/cluster-type)
Jaw pain and TMJ dysfunction
Associated neck, shoulder, facial & ear pain
Botulinum toxin can be used therapeutically to relieve headaches, migraines and jaw pain caused by tension in the jaw and head muscles. A common source we treat is the masseter and temporalis — the main muscles of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).
Common drivers include bruxism, stress and anxiety, and habits like frequent gum chewing, all of which can overwork and enlarge the masseter.
How it works.
Constant clenching and grinding overworks the masseter, enlarging the muscle, widening the lower face, and causing chronic pain. Injecting botulinum toxin into the masseter relaxes it enough to interrupt the clenching, reducing wear on the teeth and TMJ and easing the resulting headaches — without affecting speaking, eating or expressions when done correctly.
Because the masseter and temporalis work together, this tension often spreads to the temporalis; as the temporal artery runs through that muscle, its contraction can cause the throbbing "behind the eye" headache often mistaken for sinus pain. Treating both muscles together (and where needed, the muscles at the back of the head and neck) can give significant migraine relief.
What to expect.
Treatment starts with a consultation and history-taking to pinpoint the source of your pain and target the right muscles. Treatments are charged per unit, with dose set individually at consultation. These are invasive medical procedures that carry risks, aren't suitable for everyone, and should be discussed with a qualified health practitioner; individual results vary.
